Funny how I never noticed my wings before
instead relied on yours to take me places
show me the world
not knowing that the world was
bigger than you pretended .
Funny how you never told me.
Funny how when I questioned this
you had an answer
an almost rehearsed answer
as though you knew I’d ask eventually
and prepared yourself
to lie to me, to hide me.
Funny how you couldn’t keep me hidden.
Funny how when I tried out my wings
I sailed as though I’d been flying all my life
soared and soared
high above the only world I’d ever known
to discover a world I would grow to love.
